Exosomes Therapies For Hair Loss

Several new companies are developing exosome therapies to treat hair loss. Unlike previous iterations of exosomes treatments, these therapies will undergo clinical trials within the FDA approval process.

Exosomes And Hair Growth

Around two years ago, exosomes became the latest hot topic in hair restoration and hair loss treatments. Various hair transplant surgeons and dermatologists began offering exosomes injections as a sort of “next generation PRP” treatment. A few impressive hair growth results were featured online, and then things suddenly became quiet. This was, in part, due to the FDA clamping down onthe useof exosomes without first conducting proper clinical trials. Exosomes are described as extracellular vesicles which act as the signaling molecules from one cell to another. Some researchers propose that exosomes are, in fact, the greater source of benefit in approaches such as stem cell therapy. The genuine potential of exosomes is still being discovered and luckily there are many companies who are pursuing exosomes as validated therapeutics.

Shelf Stable Exosomes – Rion

Among the most interesting exosome-based companies is Rion LLC of Rochester, Minnesota. Rion was founded by two Mayo Clinic-trained MD-PhDs, Dr. Atta Behfar and Dr. Andre Terzic, respectively. Both physicians have an extensive background in cardiovascular and regenerative medicine. Rion’s platform therapeutic, Purified Exosome Product or PEP, is the result of its founders’ efforts to create an optimal therapeutic product for soft tissue regeneration. PEP is derived from human platelets. The Rion website describes PEP as “the world’s first truly off-the-shelf allogeneic regenerative medicine platform….designed to promote cell growth and formation of new blood vessels, while also reducing inflammation and protecting cells.”An important novelty of PEP lays in its ability to remain shelf stable. Pending its performance in clinical trials, such as anactive trialin wound healing, PEP would have many intriguing medical applications, including aesthetics.

Rion’spipelinecurrently shows indications for myocardial infarction, wound healing, urinary incontinence, joint disease, and an injectable hair loss treatment. Coincidentally, Rion has spun out a topical skincare product from PEP technology which is currently available, and recently published results from a six weekclinical trial. We hope Rion begins its program for hair soon and look forward to sharing updates on that front as news becomes available.

Exosomes Containing miR-218-5p – Xollent Biotech

One of the most famous studies involving exosomes and hair growth was completed by Dr. Ke Cheng at North Carolina State University. Thepeer-reviewed article确定微rna(不要与博览会混淆nger RNA or mRNA) 218-5p as an important factor in the hair growth potential of exosomes. Dr. Cheng and his team found that exosomes derived from 3D cultured dermal papilla cells contained an upregulated expression of miR-218-5p compared to cells cultured in 2D. The study was published in July 2020 and for some reason multiple people have been sending me this study over the past month to review. After further digging, and to my pleasant surprise, I discovered that that Dr. Cheng has taken the initiative to further his research in exosomes and microRNAs into a clinical setting.

You will notice a program for alopecia in the Xollent pipeline involving exosomes in a spray application. It would still need to be verified byXollent Biotech, but it seems quite possible that a spray treatment within a cosmetology bracket would have a potential abbreviated route to market. In any event, the program appears to be in early stages. Stay tuned for further updates.

Targeted Therapeutic Exosomes

If you’d like to enjoy learning about further therapeutic applications of exosomes and their technological advancement, check out theILIAS Biologicscompany. Ilias does not currently show any active programs in hair, though, they are one of the most fascinating exosome companies I discovered during my research. Ilias’ platform technology describes potentials of loading exosomes with cargo (specific molecules, etc.) and modifying the surface of exosomes for enhanced target delivery.

I hope you’ve enjoyed learning more about exosomes in this article. Let us know your feedback on these companies in the comment section.

  1. I’m interested in following the therapeutic potential of exosomes, looking forward to these companies’ updates. By the way, this would make 2 more new companies this year, I find that fascinating.

      • Thanks, yes it will be interesting to see what pathway Xollent is on.

    • It doesn’t look like any of these have a solution anywhere close to entering clinical trials. Very frustrating. Hair loss is the biggest untapped commercial market on the planet yet these companies screw around on all these other things. Hair loss revenue would fund everything else they could want to do if they solve it.

      • I’m not sure if it’s always companies “screwing around.” Sometimes that could be the case, but much more often it’s a lack of funding.

  2. The spray is very interesting. From what I’ve looked up on Exosomes I have yet to see any great results the ones I found very similar to that of PRP but I’ll remain hopeful. Also stacked with AR inhibitor or DHT and other meds it could be good for those that still have a bit of hair to rescue

  3. Thanks for updating us for new treatment for hairloss… Please give us more updates!

  4. Great! Good to see new companys to battle Hair Loss. Thanks for that Admin!

    • Thanks for all your support John Doe, you’re new one of the most supportive members in the community.

  5. I don’t understand that
If ecosomes don’t cause big side effects, and I don’t think they cause side effects
    Why not release a spray
And they didn’t even set out to examine the stages of the research

  6. Thank you Admin for the article.
Hope this trial will be quick because it was in practice since long.
Not sure how much it will help but can be an option for many.

    • Reads more like a preventive measure for stress induced hair loss. Not androgenic.

  7. Many claim in forums that the hmi-115 would probably become extremely expensive. However, on the Hopemedinc website it says:

“HopeMed is committed to the discovery, development, and commercialization of innovative, safe, effective, AFFORDABLE medicines for large, underserved patient populations.”

I therefore think that the treatment will hardly be more expensive than 20k
can someone post this on ht? Unfortunately I don’t have a profile there

    https://www.hopemedinc.com/

    • 我相信这是每个公司的目标增加volume of sales by making their treatments affordable. In my opinion, achieving the release of a product which grows hair is a more important part of the equation.

  8. Someone said this is 2030 stuff.
A solution is always 5-10 years away and has been for decades, lol.

    • bill, we get it. When humans are seeking first-time breakthroughs in technology, the technology has always been absent and elusive over the previous 10-1000s of years. The point here is we are pursuing the best potential prospects in earnest. I’d also mention that cynicism is a fruitless strategy when pursuing technological breakthroughs.

  9. 你好管理员,
Can you tell me if there is something i could do to fight my hairloss that doesnt contain minoxidil or finasteride? I live in EU, Poland. I would be grateful.

    • Ben, I’d say your options are a bit limited without min or fin and living in Poland. You could take up microneedling I suppose. There’s also ketoconazole shampoo, but I really believe it would have a quite limited effect as a solo treatment. As you may have seen in an article, a product called CosmeRNA which published studies in a Nature related journal, is aiming at a release as soon as possible. The results are modest, but I’ve seen a lot of people online have interest in using it as a maintenance treatment. To the best of my knowledge that product should be out in EU in early 2023. Beyond that Kintor KX-826 is the next best hope.

  10. I wanted to talk about the problem that users will face
future medications for any form of alopecia.
Because these are medicines and not cosmetics
So you need a medical prescription from a dermatologist
There is a big problem because 90% of dermatologists in the world do not follow and do not know what is happening in the world of alopecia or any other disease in their domain of skin disease.
An example is that we want to buy Winlevi cream
Better not go to a dermatologist for a prescription for Winlevi because they don’t know what it is

  11. Hello folliclethought, cosmeRNA was taken out of the investors page on the company website. I’m wondering if they are still pursuing it as a cosmeceutical in europe. Can you possibly confirm with them if this is still the case? Thanks

    • Jason, I will be able to get clarity on that situation for sure, but it may take a little while as I’m currently waiting to hear back from the company. In the meantime, my guess is they are still pursuing it because the cosmerna link is still on their website. Cosmerna seems to be a product name specifically for cosmeceuticals.

    • They got rejected as a cosmetic just like in Korea so now they are doing clinical trials so we should have something in 5-10 years

      • Are you kidding me ? Oh my fucking god why do all these companies fail I love follicle thought it’s just so disappointing hearing kintor failing in group buys and delaying results / hearing cosmerna get rejected now it’s gonna be another “5 to 10 years“

        • I understand your frustration, please keep the language moderate.

        • This is super disappointing kintor and cosmerna were my only hope and now they failed . I don’t respond to fin dut oral minox and ru . Jesus these companies constantly lie “ launching Eu as a cosmetical changed to failure . We won’t have a new treatment in the next 20 years .

          • I have inside information on cosmerna from a person who works there . He told me that the company was rejected for a cosmetical which makes sense since it’s an AR silencer so they will not be a cosmetic . But now they are using a higher dose and taking it to clinical trials so if all goes well the higher dose could be potentially better but the downfall is more and more time . I hope this tells you what you were looking for have a good day !

          • Hey so in our group buys people have been using 99% purity pyri/kx for 3-6 months it’s been tested same solution and everything and people have been reporting sides and no maintence or improvement . Overall people are seeing hair loss still progressing and heart side effects etc so we came to the conclusion that for now kintor seems to be lying about a lot of things . Our hope is low but I hope kintor has a secret formula that we don’t know or something

          • I think Pegasus is right he’s been in this game for a while and he knows a lot . I trust him saying kintor and cosmerna thanks again to follicle thought for updating us but it seems like a treatment is far far down the road maybe 15-30 years from now .

        • Haven’t they already performed a stage 1 and 2 trial?

Doesn’t failing to launch as a cosmetic just need them to perform a stage 3 trial?

          • No that’s not how it works they did one trial experimental on low dose cosmerna which did practically nothing . Then they did high dose one time a week but it was only 20 dudes and 20 females . They wanted to get fast release as a cosmetic but Korea rejected them and now they just have been rejected by the Eu. I emailed them and I received this” we have discontinued our cosmetical as it has failed to get approval for now we are working on our trials in a higher dose of ar98 aka cosmerna

  12. Admin, do you know if kintor is planning to commercialize their drug in EU?

    • I’m sure they are, I just don’t know the timeline for that.

  13. It would be better since it is not a drug that promises great success in treating alopecia
To suspend tests through stages because it takes a long time and requires a lot of money

  14. We are happy to announce that the manuscript entitled “Dual-Mode Vasodilator M119 Delivery to Hair Follicle via Dissolving Microneedle for Advanced Alopecia Treatment” was accepted for publication in Advanced Therapeutics.

ABSTRACT – Finasteride, the most widely used oral alopecia drug, shows several side effects such as hypoactive sexual dysfunction or depression, whereas the topical drug minoxidil demonstrates unsatisfactory efficacy. Thus, there is an increasing need for new alopecia drugs and alternative delivery systems for future alopecia treatment. Researchers have developed dissolving microneedle (DMN), a transdermal drug delivery system, which can be used with minimal invasion. However, DMN has limited application for the alopecia treatment owing to its unsuccessful implantation on the hairy scalp. Here, it is suggested that TOP-M119 (M119), a novel drug acting as a vasodilator in the scalp, and M119-loaded DMN with a specially designed shape can be used for the alopecia treatment. This M119-loaded DMN system is delivered using a newly designed applicator that supports patchless scalp implantation of DMN by microsized pillars designed to prevent accidental skin insertion. Enhanced hair follicle targeting drug delivery and superior alopecia treatment efficacy of specially designed shaped DMN and M119 has been demonstrated through in vitro and ex vivo studies. Moreover, M119-loaded DMN system shows enhanced in vivo efficacy in mouse skin and through expression markers related to hair growth, such as β-catenin, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, MECA 32, and versican.

  15. Ahmed Bekeer, sonds interesting! Thanks! … Topadur, CK Regeon and JUVIC Bio mentioned in a study together with Yonsei. …. @ Admin worth to keep an eye on it. On all three companys actually.

    • Yes, thanks Ahmed Bekeer, I’ve spotlighted Topadur pharma in the past, so will follow up for an update now.

  16. HopeMedicine seem to have a new websitehttps://hopemedinc.com/pipeline

Seems they have HMI-115 under phase 2. I’m assuming this means Phase 2 is close to starting, unless I missed news about dosages starting.

If worse comes to worse with Kintor I think they seem to be the next big contender.

However I do think it’s more likely the group buys just got scammed and someone either lied about getting it tested, rather then Kintor just going to phase 3 on lies.

    • Yes I think they got scammed as they said they got no regrowth even no maintenance, then why would they go for 2 and 3 clinical trails

      • Why did sasumed go to phase 3 and still fail ? Lol it happens all the time . I’m in the group buy we got it tested 3 times 99% purity same ethanol solution and everything lol we’ve had people get results on ru but not pyri. Kintor lied about their Covid drug also just saying kintor phase 3 will most likely be a failure like sasumed

    • Sirnagens investors page doesn’t work anymore rip cosmerna

      • Will be interesting to see the investor PDF when it is reloaded, almost no doubt they are updating it again.

    • Personally, I think it’s a slight risk for people to buy new drugs from third party manufacturers, especially before completion of clinical trials. This is mostly common sense right? That said, I understand why they do it. I think their feedback on the drugs stands for something, but it also has to be taken with a grain of salt since they’re not getting the drug from the official source.

  17. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1742706122003609Very interesting article from a couple of days ago. Apparently Yokohama are planning to start clinical trials next year,
“We started basic research using human cells in 2018, aiming to start clinical trials in 2023. And we are working hard together with the members of the laboratory so that we can deliver it to everyone as soon as possible. We also believe that we will be able to resolve cost issues.” In Japan they can apparently have the process sped up compared to USA.

    • Nice share YoYo. I’d want to hear an update from Tricho Seeds to confirm that they are still on course for clinical trials in 2023. 5 years ago, Junji Fukuda told me he hoped to start trials in about 5 years time. That doesn’t always mean that they are still on that track, while it is still possible.

  18. I have just read that article. That gives me little bit hopes.
Scientists behind look serious and at least Japanese.
    Admin,
No chance to make a interview with them?

    • iL44, no chance to interview them at the moment. I was in contact with Junji months ago when I posted the update about his company incorporating as Tricho Seeds. He can’t give an update at this time. When there is an update, I anticipate he’ll share a little bit with Follicle Thought.

  19. I have a brief and very interesting update about CosmeRNA to share. I just received an email response from siRNAgen CEO June Park today. Per her response, as of today “it’s still on track to launch in the EU”, and yes as a cosmetic.

There were quite a few people in this thread stating that CosmeRNA was rejected in the EU and claiming they received emails from the company, etc. Anyone can make a mistake or misinterpret a statement, but please refrain from posting completely misguided statements here, thanks.

    • Great news.
Thanks for following up on it. There’s been some bad rumors floating about, so good to see one of them dispelled.

  20. Hey guys,

只是检查。没有很多about in pas year or so but just wanted to provide some confidence pump ups! Hair loss used to bother me alot more when I was younger. I’m 30 now about norwood 5 maybe 4. I’m possibly looking at hair transplant situation but honestly a bit of a back burner issue in my life right now.

Most people care about this because of women. Yes obviously we all know it would be fantastic to have a beautiful hair but seriously I remember being bent out of shape about this years ago.. just wanna say don’t focus on it too much gents.. it is what it is. Focus on what you can control. Ie. Gym, business, career, sense of humor..

Again I’m in the camp of ” ok well maybe in my lifetime”… if you know what I mean. Don’t get me wrong norwood 7 would suck but just saying it’s only an issue if you make it one.

希望于stemson也许kintor坚实的年代tabilization. I had a major shed period around 25/26 but have been decently stable for 3ish years and am learning to just live with it. Go 1/2 on the sides, a bit long on the front and fuck it.

Cheers boys.. one day we will have some big news

  21. Hi John,
Thanks for your emotional letter and pumping some self confidence but on the other hand,
everybody doesn’t want hair solution just for women. The women what they want, nobody knows. They don’t know either.
In your age, hair shedding makes depressive but later trough my age (44) it became obsessive. Tell you the truth, now i am really obsessive for that. Moreover we have been waiting for a hair cure for a long time and each time we believe for scam news and 5 years away cures.
Moreover, somebody like me has a bad hair transplant story plus a terrible scar back of head.
So john, everybody has a different reason.

  22. Hair cloning is good but honestly I don’t think they will be doing trials next year. I hope they do but personally I don’t think it’s going to happen. I would like to see veterporfin tested on a human for any scar related issues (I don’t care if it’s not specifically for a hair transplant) just get it done! lol. Veterporfin just seems more realistic at this point vs hair cloning going to take more time before it can actually gets to us.

  23. bill, I understand your viewpoint on upcoming therapies. I respectfully don’t believe your input creates any value here. We all know that future treatments are not guaranteed, however, continuing to proclaim that they will fail is useless/pointless/unwanted here. Enjoy the news, anyways.

  24. I saw online from an Italian researcher who is using a blue lamp for androgenetic alopecia showing excellent results.
It is not a helmet or a cap, but a lamp.
I have a document in PDF, but I don’t know how to publish it here

    • Any way to link to share you read the article or found the Pdf?

    • Sure, I imagine you’re checking theUpdates pageseveral times a week, too? Scube3 will be developed by Amplifica, the startup company founded by Maksim Plikus. They are fundraising. Anyone reading this site an investor who wants to invest in therapies?

Olumiant is a drug for alopecia areata which is distinct from common hair loss. Olumiant will not be a useful or practical treatment for pattern hair loss.

      • I thought Amplifica would do the clinic test (phase I) this year.

        • I believe Amplifica has raised enough money to get into a trial, I think you’re referencing the comment made by Dr. Rassman on Reddit? It’s just not clear whether their first drug is Scube3 or if Scube3 is something new. In any event, they are still raising money and can always use more funding to expand and hasten their development (like every other company). They have multiple drugs in their pipeline.

          • Amplifica don’t have a website do they?

          • YoYo, they do not.

  25. Hi FT. I’m made my decision. I’m going to get a hair system. I’m done with this bs since 2015 I’ve been dealing with this. I need my confidence back. It’s time. I’ll keep you posted.

    • You got this Woofy! We gotta do what we gotta do to stall until we get something better or the actual cure.

    • Congrats on making a decision that will help move you forward, Woofy. Thanks for keeping us posted and you are welcome to share photos if you’d like to.

  26. Preparing a new article which will come at some point in the next few days.

    • Thank you Admin

Hope the day will come when we can opt what best works to us.

    • Looks interesting Hope, hard to tell what they’re precisely doing. Let’s see if any other info is available. (I will follow up if so)

  27. Hello Admin, any news on Replicel? What’s your take on if it will happen? I saw the last post about the lawsuit. That looks like a disaster. Where do you think this is going and do the results really warrant a product?

    • Chris, Shiseido is doing a clinical trial to observe if the effects of the DSC cell therapy over multiple injections warrants a product. It’s not completed yet, but when they do complete and release info it will be easy to find on this site.
